OpenEyes Co-Founder and CTO Warns Against AI “Dark Patterns” in EdTech at E-ATP Conference 2025
Dublin, Ireland – September 2025 — At the E-ATP Conference 2025, OpenEyes’s Co-Founder and CTO, Trushant Mehta delivered a keynote session titled “When AI Gets Too Clever: Unmasking Dark Patterns in EdTech Platforms,” spotlighting the ethical risks that come with the rapid integration of artificial intelligence into education technology.
The presentation challenged attendees to consider whether today’s platforms are genuinely designed to empower learners or whether hidden “dark patterns” are quietly shaping behavior in ways that benefit systems more than students.
“Dark patterns aren’t just a design flaw. They are an ethics flaw, If left unchallenged, they erode the very trust education depends on. The real question we must ask is: Are we building platforms that empower learners or platforms that quietly manipulate them?” Trushant Mehta, Co-Founder and CTO of OpenEyes Technologies.
The session also featured Patrick Coates, CEO of the e-Assessment Association, and Michael Sparling, COO & CTO of Multi-Health Systems Inc., in a discussion on how EdTech providers can anchor innovation in transparency, fairness, and responsibility.
OpenEyes Technologies underscored its commitment to responsible innovation, noting that the future of EdTech depends on platforms that are not just smarter but also trustworthy.
“AI can transform how we teach, learn, and assess but only if it’s designed to illuminate rather than obscure, to bring clarity rather than confusion, and to serve learners rather than systems,” Trushant added. “Responsible innovation isn’t optional, it’s the foundation of meaningful education.”
